A video of a wedding in Jiangsu Province, China, recently went viral, showing the woman discarding her wedding attire and canceling the ceremony in the middle.
According to Sohu, Mi An and Jiang Long met in high school.
After high school, they had a long-distance relationship for six years, meeting only a few times per year, but they remained sympathetic and supportive of one another. After seven years of dating, they decided to tie the knot.
During wedding negotiations, the bride’s parents sought a house and a car as part of the bride price, which would be handed to their daughter and son-in-law as dowry. However, the groom’s parents declined, stating that “their demands are too high, and our family can’t afford such a large sum.” Mi An, knowing her fiancé’s family condition, begged her parents to withdraw the request, stating, “We’ve been together for ten years now. I don’t want money to generate friction between our families.”
Her parents first objected, viewing this as disrespectful behavior on the part of the groom’s family. They finally consented, affected by their daughter’s misery.
However, on the wedding day, it was Mi An herself who called off the ceremony.
During the speeches, Jiang Long’s mother lavished praise on her son, even boasting, “My son is so talented and handsome, and he’s getting married without us having to spend a cent.” As she finished, visitors gasped in surprise, and Mi An’s parents glanced down, plainly upset.
At that point, Mi An took the microphone, called the wedding off, and removed her dress in front of everyone before returning it to the groom’s family.
Jiang Long’s mother ran to stop her, but Mi An, in tears, said, “I didn’t waive the bride price because your son is capable, or because I couldn’t marry anyone else. I thought our long relationship deserved respect. I convinced my parents, and now you are embarrassing them with such a statement.”
Mi An referred to her mother-in-law’s statements as “the final straw.” She felt humiliated, and her family’s respect had been ignored.
“Our family did not ask for a bride price in consideration of yours.” “I had to persuade my parents, and I’ve disappointed them,” she added.
With that, Mi An left the ceremony, ignoring everyone’s pleas.
The video drew passionate emotions online, with many admiring her firm attitude, believing it prophesied a problematic marriage in which neither the groom nor his family truly valued the bride or her family. As Mi An walked away, the groom did little to stop her, even pulling out his phone to record the scene.
“With a mother-in-law like that, leaving was the right choice,” commented one user. “If it had been me, I would have done the same thing. That woman completely hum:iliated her, even stating it in front of her parents, ignoring everything they had done for her.”
