In the past few years, Simon Cowell has experienced two significant bicycle accidents that have greatly affected his health. Recently, while appearing on the Today Show with his fellow America’s Got Talent judges—Howie Mandel, Terry Crews, and Heidi Klum—Cowell opened up about these difficult experiences.

At the age of 64, Cowell had his first major e-bike accident in Malibu in 2020, followed by a similar incident in London in early 2022.
In a promotional video for the upcoming 18th season of America’s Got Talent, Simon was asked how these accidents influenced his outlook on life. He candidly admitted, “I wasn’t in great physical shape before the accidents, so they had a huge impact.” Reflecting on his recovery, Simon acknowledged how much he needed to improve his physical health.

“It was a wake-up call, for sure,” Simon shared. Despite his love for cycling, he added, “I believe everything happens for a reason.” With a bit of humor, Simon reassured his co-judges, “I’m not giving up on cycling,” expressing how much joy the activity still brings him.

After his second accident, Simon was hospitalized with a concussion and a broken arm.
While less severe than the first accident—which left him with a spinal injury that required metal rods and screws—the recovery still required him to wear a wrist brace for several months. These incidents inspired Simon to make important lifestyle changes, particularly so he could spend more time with his nine-year-old son, Eric. His fiancée, Lauren Silverman, was a crucial source of support throughout his recovery.

In an interview with The Sun in April, Simon spoke about the emotional toll the accidents took on him. He revealed, “I was in such a dark place that, for the first time, I seriously thought about seeking therapy.” He discussed the challenge of not being able to spend quality time with Eric during his recovery.

Simon’s son, Eric, born on February 14, 2014, became a driving force in his healing process.
In a touching moment, Simon recalled that Eric had nicknamed him “Iron Man” because of the metal rods in his back. “When I came home, Eric looked at me and said, ‘Dad, you look like Iron Man,’” Simon said with a smile. “I just laughed and told him, ‘Yeah, I guess I am like Iron Man.’”

Throughout it all, Simon has maintained his trademark sense of humor. During a June 2021 episode of AGT, Terry Crews jokingly asked Simon if he could ever imagine doing stunts like those of a Shaolin Kung Fu act. Simon laughed and replied, “After my back injury, even walking around the garden with Eric felt like an accomplishment. Sometimes I thought, ‘Maybe this isn’t such a smart idea.’”

Simon’s journey is a testament to his resilience and his ability to find humor in adversity. Despite the setbacks from his cycling accidents, he continues to enjoy life and his love for biking, all while never losing his sharp wit.
